Football – How Steven Gerrads Presense Rattled my Rattle

Football crazy a meaning of many meanings, number one is either crazy over the game or secondly going crazy for every time the word football is mentioned. When you have two sons cheering on their favourite teams i.e. Liverpool and Manchester United under the same roof it is hard to ignore. Ignorance on my part on the game has left me with a feeling of emptiness. The times I screamed at the top of my voice to turn the television off, grown men kicking a ball into a net what next toddlers playing rugby.

Not sure of the trophy at stake for the big match playing on the screen but the cheers could be heard all over for every time a goal was scored. The adrenalin rush became unbearable for me at times sending shivers down the spine with all the near misses of penalty shoot outs. It all fell into place and made sense as to why football was so popular worldwide after the lads had explained the ins and outs of the game.

Over the years there has been sadness where fans have lost their lives due to unfortunate events at football matches. Then we have the violence where an innocent victim was on the receiving end of an unprovoked attack all because they batted for the other side.

Football is a game of skill where players battle it out on the pitch scoring goals for their town or country. So I say to the football hooligan leave the dedicated fan to cheer their team on in peace and let the battle with a reason behind it continue on the pitch.

I still struggle to understand this off side ruling where one player has to be in front of the other before a pass. Without doubt this is a game of skill where physical fitness and endurance prevails but it seems that skills are also required in the mastermind department. For e g the football player takes control of the ball while under attack then on top of having to retain possession he has to seek out another player to pass the ball to in hope that he is not offside.

My rendition on this may be a little offside with my explanation of what I think this ruling means, maybe this is why I can not quite get my head round it.

Regardless of the rulings and referee decisions I will continue to support this very entertaining sport. I have regrets in my ignorant years where I missed out on the pleasurable moments as in i.e. sitting in the armchair fully adorned in woollen hat scarf and rattle. To think I used to scream to turn the television off when there was match on only to find myself screaming to turn it on.

I support no particular team, my attitude is may the best team win on the day but should Steven Gerrad bless us with his presence on the pitch then I say he can rattle my rattle any day.

My life has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to football, my sons lives have been turned upside down because I get to sit up front which entitles me to possession of the remote control when the match is in play.

After a tough football season 2007-2008, finishing in the third place of “La Liga”, losing to the Manchester United at the UEFA Champions League semifinals and a after a 4-1 drubbing by their arch-rivals Real Madrid, big changes have been announced at the Barcelona FC.

Just a day after the Real Madrid defeat, on May 8 the president of Barcelona Joan Laporta announced the first change: the Dutch Frank Rijkaard, head coach of the club since 2003, would be dismissed a year before ending his contract, however, Laporta praised Rijkaard for his achievements with the team and said that former Bara player and Barcelona B coach Josep Guardiola would be taking his place.

While Rijkaard was in charge, the club won the UEFA Champions League title in the 2005-06 season, the La Liga Championship in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons and the Supercopa de Espaa in 2005 and 2006.

Besides Rijkaard dismiss, there will be many changes in the current team squad. Among the speculations that have wonder around since the beginnings of May, it has been mentioned that the Barcelona football team is going to be revamped. In the early 90s, when Manchester United were becoming the dominant team in English football, our teams didn’t exactly excel in Europe and attendances and money in the game weren’t the greatest.

Now the English league is the strongest in the world and English teams have participated in each of the last 4 European Cup Finals, and no English team lost to a foreign team in the 2007/2008 tournament. But our national team is not even ranked in the top 10.

Back then, clubs were only allowed 3 foreign players in their side at any one time, nowadays, only a third of premiership players are English. Foreign imports have been a huge factor in the recent success of the English game, but are we prepared to accept the poor form of the national team in return for a strong domestic league?

The national side recently slipped out of the top 10 in the world rankings, and its no surprise why, what with a lack of big match experience, and reluctance to play meaningful friendlies, it seems the English team is beginning to suffer from bad habits started over a decade ago.

There can be no doubting that the first team is fantastic, consisting of big match experienced star players, but who are the leading lights of the future, and are they getting the necessary experience at club level?

Probably not. With only a third of premiership players now hailing from England, only the top few players are now able to make careers in the Premier League. Players that might have developed into potential internationals 10 years ago are now being offloaded to championship sides if theyre lucky, or rotting in their clubs reserves if not.

Even the best of English talent is not guaranteed a start these days. England internationals like Crouch, Shaun-Wright Philips and Bridge have all had time on the sidelines recently.

But as the current set-up fails to impress, and the future looks bleak as players prefer not to play in tournaments for their country for fear of risking burn-out for the season ahead, we, the fans, only have ourselves to blame. Most of us would prefer our club side won a trophy over England lifting a cup, and as you cant have both, we need to start thinking seriously about which we want.

Until we change things, England will continue on a downward spiral, and managers will continue to get it in the neck, despite their best efforts.
